You know how some festivals feel like they’re trying too hard to be authentic? Well, St. James Lutheran Church’s Brats & Crafts Festival is definitely not one of those. Walk into this thing on any August weekend and you’re hit with the smell of real bratwurst sizzling on actual grills, polka music that doesn’t sound like it came from a tourist brochure, and people who genuinely seem happy to be there.
The whole thing happens at St. James Lutheran on Trabue Road in west Columbus, and honestly, it feels more like you’re crashing someone’s really good family reunion than attending a formal festival. Which makes sense, considering this congregation has been doing the German thing since 1847—way before it was trendy.
They just wrapped up their 40th anniversary celebration in 2024, which is pretty impressive when you think about it. Forty years of a church basically throwing a party in their parking lot and somehow turning it into one of the area’s favorite summer events. Not bad for what started as a simple fundraiser.
Now, let’s talk about the food because that’s obviously why most people show up. The bratwurst here uses some secret recipe from a longtime church member named Gene Planck, and they make both mild and spicy versions. I’m not usually one to get excited about sausages, but these are legitimately good—the kind where you find yourself going back for seconds even when you’re already full.
The festival runs Friday through Sunday, usually the first weekend in August. Friday kicks off around 4 PM and goes until 9, Saturday runs from late morning until 9 PM, and Sunday wraps up by 4. Sunday actually ends with a German-language worship service, which is kind of cool—apparently it’s similar to how the original founding families did things back in the 1800s.
Music That Actually Sounds German
The entertainment lineup is where this festival really shows its authenticity. You’ve got Ken and Mary Turbo Accordions Express (yes, that’s their real name), the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Sauerkraut German Band, and the Columbus Maennerchor. These aren’t cover bands—they’re the real deal.
One of the weirder attractions is this Saturday afternoon baseball game where they play with 1860s rules. It’s between something called the Ohio Village Muffins and the Lutheran Strikers, and honestly, it’s more entertaining than it sounds. There’s also this mime and juggling act that’s become a tradition, plus the usual craft booths and kids’ games.
If you’re looking for something authentic without all the commercialized nonsense of bigger festivals, this is worth checking out. Just don’t expect fancy amenities or Instagram-worthy photo ops. What you get instead is real hospitality, food made by people who actually care about it, and the kind of community atmosphere that’s getting harder to find these days.
